The battle system that results from this is two-tiered. This means that your view of the many clashes of titans is from a sidewalk vantage point. You dictate its movements with a controller that your human character carries. The robots in RAD are called Meganites, and you don't get to sit comfortably inside your personal gigantor's head and watch the proceedings through some fancy HUD. The game makes you responsible for two characters: the 17-year-old hero that you choose to be, and the mech that's in his or her control. If this sounds more like an RPG from Square than your standard mech bash-em-up, then you're starting to get an idea of just how oddball this title is. RAD can be played from the perspective of Yui, Naoto, or Ryo - three high school students with different backgrounds and personalities. Actually, you get to choose between being one of Earth's three only hopes. The guts of the story is that Earth is under attack from these huge robotic creatures. And, you don't play from an unrealistic behind-the-mech view or from a seat in the cockpit of your behemoth. It's not some futuristic deal where you play some hotshot pilot whose job it is to help the "good" federation take down the machinery of the "bad" federation. It's a mech title, but unlike most that you've ever fired away in.

Robot Alchemic Drive is one such game.Įnix's RAD is one serious genre-buster of a game. Every once in a while, though, something gets popped into a console that's just flat out different.

Grind through a BMX park dressed only in a thong and neon pink bra? Heck, that's how I spent most of last weekend. String together a ridiculous combo of killer kicks that can flatten even the most imposing of rivals? Yawn. Slay a mess of dragons and armies of orcs to retrieve the enchanted weapon that'll defeat the ultimate evil? Please. As a result, a game reviewer - whose job it is to play or at least have a working knowledge of everything that gets released - can get jaded pretty quickly.
